Tangier Shrine Clowns

Perhaps you have experienced a sinister portrayal of a clown in the media similar to the monster that took on the disguise of a clown in Stephen King’s novel and film It. The eponymous monster “it” could cause an individual to develop abnormal or exaggerated fear of clowns known as Coulrophobia, a condition that is common among children but in my opinion abundantly found among teenagers and adults.

I find no horror when looking at the character of a clown. Recently I had the opportunity to work with some amusing Shrine Clowns who graciously allowed me to pursue my creative interest while capturing candid moments as they engrossed their fans February 27, 2010, at the Tangier Shrine Circus in Omaha.

“The Tangier Shrine clowns promote healing through the joy of clowning. Their jesting bring smiles and happiness to the young and the old. Most importantly, they support the work of the Shrine Hospitals. The Shrine builds and operates the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled and Burned Children throughout the United States. There are 22 of these hospitals providing state-of-the art care which is given at no cost to stricken children from birth to age 18.”

So I ask you, what is there to fear? Fear not, my friends, as you look at their painted faces. These men are entertaining Super Heroes who change the world everyday through the caring for kids.

All my appreciation goes to Jack Schram for without him Clowns, Circus, Behind the Ring, and Carnival wouldn’t be possible. Special thanks are due to the entire Tangier Shrine Clown Unit and Candace Dyer who assisted me on location.
